For week 3 of our Summer Walks and visits, we went to see a personal collection of household items. It's an amazing place with all sorts of household goodies from the past on show. The owners of the collection were so pleasant and welcomed us into their home for a cuppa too.

The Summer Walking event of 2010 was such a success that we decided to run it again in 2011 with different locations. We will end up at a pub or cafe for refreshments.

In each instance the walks will start at 6:30pm Please wear suitable walking shoes and clothing. If it rains the walk will not take place.

27th July - around Tynygongl. Meeting in the car park of The Galnrafon Hotel, Benllech. (A walk through the fields to Llanfair ME & Goronwy Owen's Church).

3rd August - Around the beach at Traeth Coch. Meet in the car park at the Pentraeth end of the beach.

10th August - Step into the past in Llanbedrgoch. Meet at the museum (directions to follow).

17th August - Tracking the old railway. Meet in The Bull car park, Pentraeth.

24th August - Under Britannia Bridge. A woodland walk along The Straits. Meeting near Treborth Gardens or The Antelope car park.

31st August - Around The Dingle. Meet at Oriel Ynys Mon car park, Llangefni.

The Winners of the July Treasure Hunt - Llinos, Rachael & Kim

Following the business at the July meeting we all headed off on a Treasure Hunt. It wasn't the best of evenings weather-wise, with horrendous rain. However, it didn't stop us all enjoying ourselves.

We eventually all arrived at our destination in Llanerchymedd, where we lovely sandwiches and cake - plus the odd alcoholic beveridge too!

Open Garden at Bryn Seiri - 26th June 2011

For the third year running, Talwrn Lite WI provided and served refreshments at the Open Garden of Honey Tolman.

This year we had one over cast day but also one scorching day which meant the refreshments were selling fast.

Thanks to all who provided cakes or donated their time to man the stall. It was very much appreciated.

2011 Anglesey Federation Annual Show

Talwrn Lite WI ladies entered lots of competitions at the Anglesey Federation Annual Show held in Bodedern on 17th June 2011. With lots of success including winning the Co-operative competition based on "Bonfire Night".

For the Co-operative competition we needed to create a floral, craft and cookery item to tie in with the theme.

19th June 2011 - Open Garden at Ty Gwyn

On the 19th June 2011 the Talwrn Lite ladies provided and served refreshments at the beautiful home of Anna & Keith Griffiths of Ty Gwyn, Llanbedrgoch.

The weather was kind and the visitors flocked to see the gardens. It was lovely to see families relaxing on picnic rugs on the lawns while the children ran about.

The tea and cakes went down a treat too with only a handful of left-overs to take home.

Talwrn Village Hall is used by the majority of the community. However, even this use is making it difficult to make ends meet and pay the ever increasing bills.

To address this issue the Hall Committee have applied for the Energy Share project. If successful we will receive a free sustainable energy solution which will allow us to sell back any surplus energy produced to the grid.

What you need to do:

Click on this link which will take you directly to our Energy Share page.
Click on "Support this group" it's on the right hand side of the screen.
Complete the registration process and then click on the verify your support link in the email that you will receive.
The process is now complete.

It's as simple as that. Ideally, if your family members have separate email addresses we would like them to register their support too.

URGENT: Unfortunately we only have till the end of June to gain support so your immediate action would be very much appreciated.

Meeting - 1st June 2011

The speaker for this evening were representatives from the local fabric and wool shop. They came armed with lovely goodies for us to get excited about. They were so patient, explaining the techniques of crochet over and over. I'm sure that the ladies who didn't attend will be kicking themselves when they hear about the evening.

We had such a good laugh learning how to crochet. The photo above shows Glynwen modelling a beard creation made by Margaret.

Loved this chunky cushion cover.

These huge wooden crochet hooks are made locally especially for the shop that provided the demo this evening.

We pulled up the sofas and got comfy, so we could learn how to crochet. In some cases it was the blind leading the blind, but we all got the hang of it and left with balls of wool under our arms and loads of inspiration...which is what learning is all about!

Ladies that golf

Today the Talwrn Lite ladies enjoyed their first taste of golf. Even though it was blowing a gale and it rained at times, it didn't lower their spirits. I doubt that we have a budding golf pro amongst us, but it was a lot of fun and we're all looking forward to our next session.

Ever fancied yourself as a golfer? We've received an invitation to attend a free taster session - just for ladies!

It will run for 7 weeks in total. The first session is on Sunday 15th, at 11am till approximately 1pm (if it is raining heavily it will be cancelled till the following week). The following six sessions will be free trials - clubs will be provided.

Food Hygiene Course

Due to the increase in our catering events, we offered members the chance to attend and gain a qualification in food hygiene, so that we can cater with confidence.

On Wednesday, 7 ladies attended the course at Parys Training in Amlwch. All the ladies found being in the classroom for a day hard going, especially sitting the test at the end of the session when we were all close to being brain-dead due to the amount of information we had taken in.

We now have to wait between 4 - 6 weeks to see if we've passed. So it's fingers crossed for now.

Meeting - 4th May 2011 - A Smell Sensation

We had a last minute change of Guest Speaker at our May meeting, with Llinos stepping in to provide our noses with a smell sensation. We learnt about the different notes in aromatherapy oils, how they can be applied for different needs and bombarded poor Llinos with questions like what oils should be used for which ailment. At the business part of the meeting we discussed the Resolutions regarding Mega Farms & Closure of Libraries. There was lots of talk of the wonderful Royal Wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton last Friday. To celebrate their marriage we raised a glass of fizz to them.

Talwrn Lite entered both the Easter Bonnet and the decorative table decoration competition but unfortunately was not successful on this occassion. Congratulations to Trearddur Bay WI on winning both competitions.

Meeting - 6th April 2011 with Clinique & Estee Lauder

At our April 2011 meeting, Talwrn Lite WI welcomed two big named beauty houses - Clinique and Estee Lauder, to the village hall to talk about skin care and the application of make up.

Helen and Sadie represented Clinique while Denise and Petrina represented Estee Lauder. (For further information on the products they used and discussed you will find them at the Bangor branch of Debenhams).

The demonstration was followed with Cheese and Wine. We sang Happy Birthday to Treasurer Ann, while a large chocolate birthday cake was brought into the room.

It was a fabulous evening, with several guest members attending who have shown an interest in joining Talwrn Lite WI.

Clinique & Estee Lauder Evening

At our April 2011 meeting (Wednesday 6th) we will be welcoming the Clinique and Estee Lauder ladies to Talwrn Lite WI to chat , advise and offer top tips on how to look after our skin through the changing seasons. It's an open house, so please invite your friends and relatives to come along at 7:30pm at Talwrn Village Hall, Talwrn, Llangefni, Anglesey. The cost for non members is £2 which can be paid on the evening. This amount covers the raffle and refreshments. We look forward to seeing you there.

At our March meeting we had three ladies visit as Guest Speakers.

Edwina and Val provided a cookery demonstration. Talking about how to use Quark, a very low fat soft cheese which is an ideal carrier for other flavours. They created some stunning dips and an alternative lemon cheesecake. At the end of the demonstration, members were able to taste the creations. To round off the evening, Ann told several jokes.

I have detailed the recipes below for those of you who were not there or did not manage to pick up a recipe sheet:

Cheese Dips

1/3 carton of Quark

1 dessert spoon Natural Yogurt

1 dessert spoon Light Mayonaise

Mix all together with a fork and then divide into two bowls.

Into one of these portions ass 1oz grated Cheddar Cheese

Finely chopped Spring Onions

Into the other portion mash 1/2oz Stilton

Serve with celery & carrot sticks or Pringle biscuits.

Salmon Pate

1/3 carton of Quark

1/2 tin Salmon

1.4 teaspoon dried dill

Blend all ingredients together and place in a ramekin dish and chill.

Lemon Dessert

1/3 carton of Quark

1 small Digestive Biscuit

1 heaped teaspoon Lemon Curd

Lemon Zest

Place the whole biscuit at the bottom of the ramekin dish.

Mix together the other ingredients with a fork and place on top of biscuit. Chill.

At the 2nd February meeting, our Secretary, Sam Squires provided a talk on her hobby of scrapbooking and papercrafting. She provided a kit for each member to create a CD Gift holder.

The example shown above has a valentine theme, but the CD holder could be given for any occasion with the CD holding memorable photographs or songs.

Cafe Direct Sack Challenge

In a recent issue of WI Life magazine, Cafe Direct set WI groups a challenge to create something from their used coffee sacks. Our member, Margaret Bradbury sent off for the pack and soon received a box full of goodies, including some sacks.

The photographs shown above are the three creations made from the sacks. The top two is a notice board, which is now in use in our Village Hall and was created by Delyth Jones.

The third photo is an owl doorstop, created by Samantha Squires.

The fourth photo is an advent calender, made by Sharon Crowden. We actually used this item as a fund raiser at the village Christmas Fair.

The photographs have been submitted to Cafe Direct and are on their Facebook page here, where you can vote for your favourite creation. The item with the most "likes" will win a prize for the WI the item is related to. So please get voting.

Talwrn Village Christmas Fayre 2010

The Tawrn Lite WI ladies assisted at the Village Christmas Fayre, serving refreshements and running the tombola stall.

Due to the snowy weather conditions it didn't seem to be as busy as previous years. All the same, the Tombola stall was cleared of goodies a little more than an hour into the event!

70's Theme Christmas Party 2010

Well here is the evidence of our 70's theme Christmas party. We had a fantastic evening, with themed food of Melon boats, chicken & chips, black forest gateaux, arctic roll or vinetta, mince pies, coffee and after eightes. There was Mateus Rose wine, Snowballs and Babycham to drink. Each member took small goodie bag away with them containing Flying Saucers, Love Hearts, Refreshers and Black Jacks. President Delyth Jones gave each member a gift of hand-made soap.

Huge thanks to Delyth for doing the shopping etc, to Linda for providing the veggie option and to Adrian and Tony for cooking and serving the food. If it wasn't for these people the night would have not been the success it turned out to be!

Christmas Wreath & Tree Festival & Fayre

The Anglesey WI Federation organised a Christmas Wreath & Tree competition at their Christmas fair on 27th November. The brief for the competition was to use artificial materials.

A group of Talwrn Lite WI ladies spent three evenings cutting and sewing to create this stunning fabric heart wreath. It was a real team effort and was enjoyed by all.

Yesterday, Saturday 6th November the Talwrn Lite WI choir competed in the village Eisteddfod and won their category. Congratulations girls, you sounded brilliant!

Meeting - Wednesday 3rd November 2010

We had a real treat at the start of the meeting. Our Choir (who are entering the Talwrn Village Eisteddfod on Saturday) gave us a sample of their performance. They sounded stunning! Good luck in the competition.

This was our third Business meeting. A WI Advisor attended to ensure the correct procedures and everything went smoothly. Following the business we had a relaxed chatty evening, discussing the December (1970s fancy dress theme) meeting and our craft item for the Cafe Direct, sack competition.

We are meeting on Wednesday 10th November 2010 in the Village Hall to plan our action for both the sack and the Christmas wreath entries. Also, if you didn't quite finish your fabric covered box, you can bring it a long and complete it in a relaxed environment, with the help of wine.

This walk high-lighted the real beauty of Anglesey scenery. These photos were just a few of the ones taken on the walk.

This was the fourth of six summer walks (Wednesday 11th August at 6:30pm - meeting in the car park of The Bull, Pentraeth).

This was a stunning walk taking us down onto Pentraeth beach and then up country pathways. It looked like it may rain, but fortunately the weather held off.

Following the walk we retired to The Bull pub for a well earned drink.

Summer Walks Event - 4th August 2010

This week we met at 6:30pm in the car park behind the Co-op store in Benllech (it's the one by the library.

The walk was on both beach and boardwalk. We stopped at the tavern at St. David's Caravan Park for refreshments.

Summer Walks Update - 21st July 2010

There was a disappointing turn-out to the first of our Summer Walks - this was due to a number of factors including The Royal Welsh Show being on and also the threat of rain.

However, the rain stayed away and we had a very pleasant walk. Starting at The Parciau arms, following the footpath across fields to Llanllgo Church and graveyard where the memorial for The Royal Charter is. We then followed the road back round through Marianglas and retired to the pub.

Thank you to those who attended and thanks to Margaret for being our guide for the evening.

At 6:30pm we will be meeting at The Parciau Arms, Marianglas for a walk which will take in a visit to The Royal Charter Memorial at Llanallgo. This will form part of the WI Triathlon.

Open Garden - Sunday 13th June 2010

Local gardener Anna Griffiths and her husband Keith invited Talwrn Lite WI to provide and serve refreshments at their Open Garden, (part of the National Garden Scheme) at their home Ty Gwyn, Llanbedrgoch.

Unfortunately, the weather was not good in the morning, with the rain falling till 2pm when the sun came out and the visitors started to arrive.

Thanks to all those who donated cakes and helped on the day.

We had some laughs though. In the top photo: Trish, Marge and Di - re-living the scene from Calendar Girls where they say "we're going to need considerably bigger buns"! (Click on the photo to get a bigger image).

Following the business at the June 2010 meeting we had a talk and demonstration of magic tricks from Les Leveen and his assistant Betty. Les has many years of experience of being a Magician and some of his jokes were just as old. However it was a very enjoyable evening, especially as many of the members had the giggles half way through the talk when helpers were required for the tricks.

Every picture tells a story!

This month our Guest Speaker was Andy Barton, a local businessman and amateur photographer.

Andy has a very informal style of talk, which suited our group down to a "T", but appears to be a perfectionist where his long standing interest in photography is concerned.

He shared with us his absolutely stunning photographs - some sky/landscapes, people, interesting places, even his family doing normal things. He certainly has a knack of searching out that extra something to get the perfect picture.

Andy detailed how he achieved specific styles and encouraged our ladies to take a basic camera and get snapping the shots and not to get bogged down in what is right or wrong. As far as he is concerned, if it is pleasing to you (the photographer) that is all that matters.

We provided lots of felt, beads, buttons, threads and pins and let the ladies loose with them - they certainly made some stunning pieces.

Carmen, Opera Theatre Trip - 13th March 2010

Our WI had a trip to the theatre in Llandudno recently to see Bizet's opera, Carmen performed by the Welsh National Opera.

It was quite a long production, but stunningly presented and of course the sub-titles helped us along with the story.

At the March meeting we had a stunning demonstration from a local chocolatier / confectioner Ben Lee. Ben demonstrated how to work with chocolate and created a stunning water lily, assisted by member Anne Weston.

Following the meeting and Guest Speaker at the March meeting we had a St.David's Day supper comprising of Leek & Potato Soup, followed by Bara Brith. Thank you to all those who made the soup. Also, huge thanks to Helen for creating an interesting spin on the raffle prize.

Each member returned home with a little pamper pack for Mother's day with the compliments of Delyth Jones our President

The guest speaker for January was Ann Lane from Stay Slim with Ann. Ann gave an entertaining and enlightening talk about her own battle with weight, keeping her weight off , becoming a lecturer for Weight Watchers and starting up her own weight management business.

With years of experience she was able to provide information about healthy eating in a relaxed, informal way. Ann provided a fun quiz and finished the evening with some saucy jokes which had our members in stitches.

An invitation from Llangefni WI to attend "A Night of Carols with Nantle Brass Band" at St Cyngar's Church, Llangefni on 14th December at 7:30pm (£2 includes a programme, tea & mince pies). This should be a superb way of getting into the Christmas mood....

...and we certainly had a good time - The giggles started! The shoulders were shaking as we attempted to stifle the laughter.

Talwrn Christmas Fair - Fri 4th December 2009

The 2009 Talwrn Christmas Fair was held in the village hall. The Talwrn Lite ladies came up trumps in helping our community hall raise funds by donating items and giving their time by holding a Bottle Tombola stall. It turned out to be a real hit as the stall was empty within the hour. I'm not sure if this says something about our community liking a tipple, but our volunteers certainly enjoyed the mulled wine and mince pies!

Christmas started early on Anglesey when Talwrn Lite WI held a minimal business meeting quickly followed by a tasty Christmas meal at The Bay Cafe in Benllech. Twenty-five ladies attended the dinner. The food was fantastic and we had a good laugh playing "Snatch Bingo"! Many thanks to Margaret for taking the meal requirements & payments and to Helen for arranging the game.

Talwrn Eisteddfod - Saturday 7th November 2009

The village of Talwrn holds an Eisteddfod each year. At the last minute, Talwrn Lite WI decided to enter a singing party. They sang a song (in Welsh) from the Blood Brothers musical called "Tell Me It's Not True - Dwed nad yw ein wir".

The top photo shows our nervous ladies just before they started to sing. The photo at the bottom shows the victorious group (including Martin Jones who conducted the party). They sounded fantastic, the judges comments were very complimentary and Talwrn gained first place, winning a trophy and a £75 cash prize which will go into the Talwrn Lite funds.

Thank you also to the ladies that helped in the kitchen with refreshments.

Getting down to business...

November is traditionally "The Business" meeting of the WI year and at Talwrn Lite we were no different. As it was our first Annual Meetting we had an AFWI Advisor (Yvonne Tatum) in attendance to ensure we covered everything required. On completion of "The Business" we had refreshments of Pimms, Wine and Nibbles while completing a quiz.

AFWI Fashion Show - 9th October 2009

The Anglesey Federation of Women's Institutes held a fashion show in Talwrn Village Hall to raise funds for the Federation. Delyth Jones transformed the hall with a professional lit catwalk, delicate drapes and floral arrangements. Refreshments were served by gentlemen wearing evening (black tie) suits.

Stunning attire from the Menai Bridge boutique "Elsa" were displayed by five models. Some of the key features to be aware of for Autumn Winter 2009 appear to be tweeds, velvet trousers, large brooches and different shaped hem-lines.

Quiz Night - 8th October 2009

Gwyngyll Women's Institute invited the Talwrn Lite WI ladies to provide a team at their evening quiz, held in the Llanfairpwll WI hall. Thanks to Marge, we were called the "Talwrn Totties"! Talwrn Lite came joint third with three other teams. The refreshments were lovely - especially the cakes. Thanks for a great evening Gwyngyll.

Can you believe that a year has passed since the initial meeting to see if the village of Talwrn wanted a Women's Institute. At the October meeting, the members celebrated with Bucks Fizz and birthday cake.

At this meeting, fellow Talwrn Lite member Pam Holt provided a lively demonstration on making a no-cook cake which could be used at Christmas. In true Blue Peter tradition Pam unveiled a cake she made earlier and issued the challenge of "Guess the alcohol in the cake"!

The first meeting back after the summer holidays and we were a chatty bunch - and that was before the wine!

Having whipped through the business (and there was quite a lot of it), we settled down to listen to our Guest Speaker.

The theme of this meeting was "Green Fingers" learning how to get the most out of our gardens, knowing what and when to plant and the best way to compost.

Yvonne Tatum provided a slide show about her garden. The initial barren garden she took on bares little resemblence to the garden of plenty it has now become. Discussing the problems with the local soil, how to protect vegetable crops from the strong winds, how and why we should to rotate crops and how insects and wildlife can be a friend to the vegetable gardner.

Yvonne kindly provided us with some of her huge marrows which we raffled and we also tried her home made raspberry jam which had a fantastic flavour and was great on the fruit scones.

Anglesey Federation Treasure Hunt - Friday 14th August 2009

August Evening Walk - 5th August 2009

In August the WI traditionaly do not hold a meeting, so we decided to have an evening guided walk in the Gaerwen area of Anglesey which was open for all Women's Institutes to attend in the Anglesey Federation. We were so fortunate with the weather. It was a warm evening, with just a little breeze to keep us cool. We had a little hic-cup at the start as our guide was not present. Fortunately Noel stood in and provided a comprahensive knowledge of the area. The walk which was approximately 3.5 miles and took us down country lanes with spectacular views.

Refreshments were provided in the village hall.

Open Garden - Sunday 5th July 2009

The Talwrn Lite WI ladies in association with the Talwrn Playing Field Committee were invited
by Honey Tolman to provide and serve refreshments at an "Open Garden" as part of the National Garden Scheme at Bryn Seiri, Talwrn.

The gardens are absolutely stunning with herbaceous borders, sloped woodland garden, pergola, pond, unusual shrubs with views to the mountains and Red Wharf Bay. The Open Garden had been well advertised in local newspapers and even in an article in The Times. We were really uncertain to how many people would visit the garden on Wimbledon Mens final day. Fortunately the sun shone, the cakes & tea were made and we took the fantastic sum of £430.

To celebrate coming first with our co-operative piece on the theme of "A Gothic Wedding" at the Anglesey Federation WI Annual Show we raised a glass of champagne to the ladies who helped to make our first show exhibit such an achievement and applauded all who contributed in many and varied ways.

As it was summer we had pimms, strawberries and dips for refreshments.

Our guest speaker for July was Benjamin Lee of Benjamin Lee Cakes.

Benjamin lives in our village. He started working in a local bakers in Llangefni, wanted to further his career so moved away to learn other skills. He has now returned to Anglesey and has been making speciality celebration cakes for some years. More recently he has purchased the Strawberrry Farm cake business and is moving it forward into other directions.

From listening and watching Benjamin demonstrating, it became apparent that he is a perfectionist and made his art look so easy. The Talwrn Lite ladies sat in awe watching him create a cake topper in the shape of a teddy and delicate rosebuds made from sugar paste.

We hope to invite Benjamin back in the coming year to demonstrate his skill with chocolate.

Anglesey Federation Annual Show - Friday 19th June 2009

All the preparations for the Anglesey Federation Annual Show were well worth the effort when we found out that we had first place for the co-operative class piece on "The Wedding" theme. We didn't want to take the usual route, so decided to go for a "Goth Wedding".

Here are the judges points and comments on our piece:

Staging & Display - 18/20 - Good visual impact.

Interpretation - 19/20 - Good for the chosen theme.

Floral Art - 18/20 - very neat c0-ordinated exhibit.

Cooked Item - 15/20 - Icing should be put on with jam not butter icing.

Craft Work - 18/20 - Great use of colour for a gothic piece.

A big thank you to Pam for creating the cake, to Anne for the sewing and floral arrangement, to Di & Marg for beading the tiara and all the other ladies who played a part in our first group exhibition.

It's hard to believe that we have reached the middle of the year already. I hope you're enjoying the sunshine and not suffering from the heat too much.

The meeting this month had several apologies - including one from our President, Delyth Jones. Delyth was not able to be with us as she was attending the WI AGM, at the Royal Albert Hall, London.

Following the business side of the meeting we welcomed Rhian from Tlws Jewellery. Rhian gave an over-view of the company, detailing it's recent growth and the countries where the items are sourced from.

Rhian had a huge selection of items for our ladies to check out - some were silver, silver plated and some even recycled from items like quality street tins which were especially interesting.

Thursday 7th May 2009 - The Thorn Birds Musical

Some of the ladies from Talwrn Lite WI had an outing to Venue Cymru, Llandudno to see the musical production of Colleen McCullough's "The Thorn Birds".

The only way to describe the show is that it was "unexpectedly different" having us howling with laughter. It was an excellent way to get to know other members of Talwrn Lite away from the usual village hall environment.

Following the main business part of the meeting, we discussed our Annual Show exhibit. Some interesting ideas were thrown into the pot and our entry is really taking shape.

This month our Guest Speaker was Alison Chapman of Rhosmeirch who teaches patchwork techniques in Anglesey & Gwynedd.

Alison brought along bags of her stunning quilts. Showing us her early creations, works in progress and more recent projects, including bags and wall-hangings. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the Talwrn ladies will be joining her class in September!

Alison also provided us with a hands-on craft project. She demonstrated how to make cute bunnies and chicks from a face cloth and we also made a little draw-string bag from squares of fabric too.

Each member of Talwrn Lite received a free BusyLizzie plant to take home.

At this meeting there was quite a bit of business to be discussed, which unfortunately took quite a while to relay to the Talwrn Lite members.

With the AFWI Annual Show looming in June we thought we could benefit from some guidance on show etiquette. We therefore invited AFWI Chairman, Audrey Jones to be the guest speaker. Audrey has many years experience of entering and judging shows, so she was the ideal candidate to provide an insight into how to enter and present our show exhibits.

We have four new members join Talwrn Lite WI this month. With the number growing steadily we must be doing something right!

Following the business, the evening was all about "Pampering Yourself" and we certainly did that! With champagne, strawberries and Thorntons chocolates as well as the normal wine & nibbles, we had a fun and relaxing evening.

Sheila Phillips gave a short talk on aromatherapy and demonstrated a hand massage. Each member took it in turn to provide a hand massage to the person they were sat next to.

At the end of the evening each member took away a small bouquet of daffodils

At present we have 22 paid-up members. We had four new ladies attend this meeting and they seem positive about joining Talwrn Lite.

The pictures above show an accordian style mini book created using origami techniques, demonstrated by Sam Squires. These can be used as greetings cards, photo frames or mini books.

The meeting starts at 7:30 pm where business will be discussed for the first half hour.

We've had a little hic-cup with a speaker for this month, so this meeting is going to be a "hands-on" crafting session. At 8pm we will have refreshments and start creating a "special something" in paper.

Come and join in the fun at the January meeting called "Cash in the Attic". An expert will provide a talk and will advise on an item you wish to have valued.

Well what an interesting evening this turned out to be. The guest speaker for the night was Simon Bower, Auctioneer at Morgan Evans.

Simon provided information on the items we brought along to the meeting. He detailed the approximate age and value. Where the items were made and high-lighted little give-away marks that indicated the history of an item - some of which would normally go un-noticed by somebody like myself.

Simon gave an informal talk about the present state of the auction market and also asked us to guess the value of a decorative piece of jewellery. Now this could have been a cheap bit of costume jewellery, but it actually had a value of £20,000 - and no, we didn't mug him on his way out!

This festive meeting had a huge amount of apologies due to this horrible flu virus and tummy bug that has been doing the rounds.

After the business side of the meeting was out of the way, we cracked open the wine and created "beautiful" floral/candle table decorations and gift boxes too.

This was followed by a fantastic Christmas buffet which was enjoyed by all.

This turned out to be another late night, but was well worth the darkened rings around the eyes in the morning!

The Talwrn Village Fair will be held in the village hall at 6:30pm on Friday 5th December.

Talwrn Lite WI is holding a "Bottle Tombola". If possible, we would like three donations from each member. This could be in the form of pop, bubble bath, ketchup - anything in a bottle.

How quickly the time has come once again for our annual meetings. I hope you are all prepared to take your WI successfully into the future. All our branches maintained their membership this year, with nine showing an increase. Please be prepared to take office when approached.

Lynn from Llandwyn WI would like to thank all those who have been knitting jumpers for aids babies. She has been over-whelmed by your response and generosity.

The last delivery date for the jumpers is the first week of December, therefore, jumpers will be greatly accepted (brought into the AFWI office) up until the last week of November.

Meeting - Wednesday 5th November 2008

At the November 2008 meeting of Talwrn Lite WI we would like our members to get to know each other.

To do this we ask all members to bring a photograph of themselves when they were young along to the meeting. We will then need to guess who is who. There will be a prize for the person that can match the most names to the photographs.

Also at this meeting we would like our members to suggest activities, guest speakers, trips etc so that the diary for the year ahead can be planned and booked. There will be an idea box available at the hall for those ladies who would prefer not to speak out at the meeting.

All feedback is appreciated - it's your Women's Institute so tell us what you would like.

This meeting turned out to be so much fun.

To mix everybody up and get us all talking to people we perhaps didn't know, we held a speed-date format get to know you session - it did exactly that! It's quite surprising what you learn about people. Obviously the wine made us slightly more chatty than usual, with the last of us leaving the hall after midnight!

The photograph game got a few of us guessing with Rachael and Pam being joint winners.

We had a whole host of suggestions for our 2008/2009 programme of events. Pam will have her hands full sorting out all the requests. For the lady who requested Len from Strictly...sorry, we are not able to help on this occasion, but who knows what we can do in the future!

Anglesey Federation WI Newsletter - October 2008

Two new WIs have been established: Talwrn Lite WI and Menai Straits WI.

Tai Chi - In view of the recent success of the afternoon sessions, we are hoping to run another course in the near future.

WISE - Women in Sensible Exercise - there will be taster sessions in Welsh Clog Dancing, Golf Salsa Dancing & Croquet - details to follow in next newsletter.

2009 WI Diaries are available - contact the office asap before they all go!

Knitted Father Christmas (any size) - entries into the federation office by 6th October in readiness for Royal Welsh Winter Fair.

Folk Singing Workshop - Sat 8th November 10am-3pm WI Hall, cost £14, names & cheques to the federation office by 28th October.

Ball/Dinner Dance with live music - 15th November - Bulkeley Hotel Beaumaris. Tickets £30 per head, contact Delyth Jones (closing date 28/10/08). All proceeds in aid of the WI Hall Restoration Fund.

Salsa Dancing - Starting 17th, 24th November, 1st, 8th 15th December - 5 Monday evenings followed by 5 more sessions in the New Year at 7.30pm until 8.30 at St Cyngar's Church Hall, Llangefni. Nominal charge £1 per visit.

Bilingual St David's Day Celebration - 27th February 2009 - Lastra Hotel. Welsh choir and hotpot supper £8 per head for a splendid evening. Details to follow.

Conference of Wales - April1st (Concert) and 2nd (Conference) 2009 - names of interested parties wishing t0 join a trip for an overnight stay by end of November - numbers are limited.

Denman Taster Day - 18th may 2009 - £95 including travel and B&B. Names and £25 deposit by 28th October 2008. Places are restricted.

Please remember if you pay for tickets for an event or outing and you are not able to attend, it is Federation Policy that no refunds are given.
